Our GymAble department is run by Emily.
It is a section for any member that has physical, psychological or social needs. During these classes, we use a wide range of resources such as PECS boards, tactile / sensory equipment, large visual wall boards, adaptive equipment and much more.
Our coaches have been on many courses such as Gymnastics Ireland’s disability coaching add-on module, Sport Ireland / CARA’s Autism in sport course, CARA’s disability awareness webinars and lots of extensive work in collaboration with the Donegal Sports Partnership / CAMHS / Sport Ireland / CARA /Gymnastics Ireland / local schools.
GymAble is divided into four sections:
Dynamic warriors is a specific class designed for children with neuro-diverse needs, such as Autism and / or ADHD. This was a pilot program which was run in collaboration with our local CAMHS (Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service).
We run a weekly session for children with mental and intellectual disabilities called Spirit Warriors. This involves the basics of gymnastics and movement in a safe and stimulating environment.
Super warriors is a weekly session class for children with physical disabilities only. We felt this was a very apt name as they are super heroes with super strength and talents.
Children have time and space to learn how to adapt equipment and skills to suit their own physical abilities. This involves breaking down the basic skills in order to teach an adaptive method of learning to encourage integration into mainstream classes later.
There are many children and adults with varying needs in our mainstream classes and we take pride in catering to each and every one of their needs.
